Fulton County Farmer/Commissioner, Steve Metzger in partnership with the Conservation Cropping Systems Initiative (CCSI), Fulton County SWCD, and Pulaski County SWCD), is hosting a Cover Crop and Live Grazing Field Day on Thursday, September 27, 2018, from 5:00 – 8:00 PM ET at 2383 N 600 W, Rochester, IN 46975.
Attendees will walk away having experienced four exciting educational opportunities. First, to see up close a 15-way Cover Crop mix seeded after a wheat harvest. Second, multiple paddocks that have been grazed over the month of September in two and four-day rotations. Third, the impacts on soil health indicators from cover crop and grazing. Fourth, a live turn-out of beef cattle into a paddock, including drone surveillance of how the animals move through the area.
“Watch the cattle select which cover crop to strip and eat first. Expect the cover crops to be up to the cow’s eyeballs,” CCSI Director Lisa Holscher said.
CCSI plans for attendees to leave the field day knowing more about four basic conservation principles. “Folks will learn how to select and establish cover crop species for grazing, more on how to use cover crops after wheat or silage to extend forages, the benefits of cover crops and rotational grazing, ”Holscher added.
Those interested in attending are asked to respond by Monday, September 24 for catering needs. Registration is available online at https://graze-covers-2018.eventbrite.com or by phone: 574-233-5279 x3 (Fulton County SWCD) or 574-946-3243 x3 (Pulaski County SWCD).
