Indiana farmers planted 5.7 million acres of corn for all purposes in 2015, a decrease of 200,000 from last year, according to Greg Matli, State Statistician of the USDA, NASS, Indiana Field Office. The cool and wet spring delayed planting, giving farmers a short window to get the crop in the ground.
Planted acreage was estimated as of June 1, 2015 and does not reflect any losses resulting from recent flooding across the State.
Corn acreage as of June 1 expected to be harvested for grain, at 5.49 million acres, is down from last year by 280,000.
Soybean acreage planted or to be planted for all purposes in Indiana is estimated at 5.7 million acres, nearly 4 percent above the 2014 planted acreage level. This is the first time since 2006 that soybean acreage equaled or exceeded corn, and the third time this has happened in the history of Indiana soybean estimates. This is also tied with 2006 for the second highest planted total, just 100,000 acres short of the record high set in 2002. Soybean acreage for harvest is expected to total 5.69 million acres, also up 4 percent from a year earlier.
Winter wheat planted acres of 340,000 in Indiana are down 13 percent from the previous year. Area expected to be harvested for grain, at 305,000 acres, is down 9 percent from a year ago, on par with the May 1 forecast. Wheat yield and production will be updated in the July 10 Crop Report. Oat planted acreage of 20,000 is unchanged from 2014. Oat acres expected to be harvested, at 9,000, are up 1,000 acres from the previous year. Producers expect to harvest 570,000 acres of dry hay in 2015. Alfalfa hay acreage, at 240,000 acres, is unchanged from last year, while all other dry hay acreage, at 330,000 acres, is down 8 percent from 2014.
