Senators Hope to Unveil Immigration Bill Next Week

The bipartisan group of Senators working on immigration legislation hope to unveil a bill next week. From there – the timeline for moving to a vote has not been decided. A key member of the so-called gang of eight – Florida Senator Marco Rubio – is demanding full and careful consideration of any immigration measure. A spokesperson for Rubio says he wants public hearings, a committee markup and an amendment process on the floor. Rubio believes that’s key to building and maintaining conservative support for a comprehensive immigration rewrite. The Senator’s spokesperson added that it’s important for people to understand what is – and what is not – in the bill. A Democratic aide says nothing Rubio wants contradicts what others in the group are thinking – stating that all of the Senators want an open process.

The other Senators working to draft an immigration bill are Charles Schumer of New York, Richard Durbin of Illinois, Robert Menendez of New Jersey, Michael Bennet of Colorado, John McCain of Arizona, Jeff Flake of Arizona and Lindsey Graham of South Carolina.
