Technology Solving Nitrogen Guesswork

New technology is helping farmers be more efficient and better environmental stewards.  Several of the new data services have introduced features that help farmers use their nitrogen more efficiently and keep runoff to a minimum.  One example is the Nitrogen Advisor from Climate Corporation. Evin Levey, Director of Product Management with Climate, says their new tool gives farmers real time data about nitrogen levels in their fields so they can make better decisions, “Nitrogen Advisor gives them a sense of where they are in terms of nitrogen to the plant in the field.”

But the real value of this software is helping farmers when unexpected conditions occur, such as a sudden heavy rain. “They don’t have to worry is that storm going to reduce my nitrogen and cost me yield,” Levey told HAT. “With our system they have the data and can decide what they are going to do.” He said, with Nitrogen Advisor, a grower can then choose his options if he needs to side dress or put on a rescue treatment.

Levey says the tool helps growers apply just the right amount of nitrogen at just the right time to maximize the yield benefit. It also keep growers from over-applying or putting too much in a field when it is not needed, thus helping to reduce runoff and nitrogen loss.  Get more information about this product from Climate Corporation.
