Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels spoke to more than 150 Chinese business leaders as his delegation hosted the Indiana Business Conference in Shanghai. The governor is visiting China and Japan over the next two weeks. The Shanghai address summarized Indiana’s economic history, but highlighted the very particular strengths and partnerships Indiana offers in life sciences, vehicles, energy, and agriculture.
“These days Indiana is still known for its manufacturing leadership and its agricultural production, but now we’re known for something different and something larger,” he said. “We are known as one of the very best business climates in the United States, and one of the very most welcoming and hospitable places for enterprises of all kinds to risk their money and know that they have an excellent chance of making fine products and recovering their investment.”
Daniels explained Indiana’s geographical advantages for wind power, and he identified its other agricultural strengths.

“I always like to tell my Chinese friends that no one produces more or better ducks than Indiana. We’re now the world’s number producer of popcorn. We are fourth in soybeans, fifth in corn and pork production, as well as many specialty products, and a major exporter of all of those. There’s a good reason that the Y.K. Furniture company came to our state and joined a very large number of furniture makers who have always been there. We are home to the forest that produce the finest hardwoods in America. Any business which makes use of fine woods would do well to look at Indiana as a place to do that business.”
Indiana is the number one U.S. state per capita in attracting foreign direct investment. Daniels told the Chinese the reason is the overall business-friendly climate that promises new businesses the best chance anywhere to make a profit.
