“We want to build a very strong network of individuals who serve agriculture in leadership roles. We wanted to make sure they were well grounded with a strong knowledge of the issues that affected the industry. We wanted them to continue to grow their leadership capacity so they could be good decision makers and policy influencers.”
Archer said there was an emphasis 28 years ago to get a great start for the Agricultural Leadership Program by enrolling a top flight group. You only need to hear a few names to know they had an impressive first class.
Archer told HAT those names include “people like Bill Biddle with Biddle Seeds; Kay Whitehead with Seldom Rest Farms; Jim Moseley who has done tremendous leadership in DC as well as here in the state; Don Villwock, President of Indiana Farm Bureau; Alan Kemper, who has done a lot of national work on behalf of corn and soybean growers in Indiana and the U.S. And the list just continues to grow in terms of where those individuals have applied their knowledge, their skills and made a difference for agriculture.”
Class 15 follows the usual path of a very diverse group representing all aspects of agriculture.
“It’s everything from sod farming to poultry production to our traditional grains crops, corn and soybeans, animal agriculture. It includes those who are involved in legal and financial services for the industry.”
Class members also come from state and local government, extension and education. They will begin their journey in July, and the recruitment process for class 16 begins next summer.
