SURE Deadline for 2010 Crops is Friday

The deadline to apply for assistance for 2010 crop losses under the Supplemental Revenue Assistance Payments – or SURE – program is fast approaching. USDA Farm Service Agency Administrator Bruce Nelson is reminding growers that they have until Friday to apply. FSA will not act on applications submitted after the deadline. Steve Brown, with the Indiana FSA state office told HAT, “Producers who may still be interested to see if they qualify for payments need to call their local office today.”  SURE provides crop disaster assistance payments to eligible producers on farms that have incurred crop production or quality losses.

Brown said that, once a producer makes the call to their local FSA office, an appointment will be set up to complete a SURE information report, “We will then be able to tell the producer if they have a chance of qualifying for a crop loss or quality loss payment.”  The SURE program has been criticized for its slowness in getting payments to farmers, but Brown says the situation has improved greatly.
