DuPont Pioneer recommends dividing fields into management zones to best use variable rate technology. Management zones are areas with like landscape and soil features that should have similar crop yield potential. Producers can use yield maps and soil survey information to define management zones – but production data isn’t always available and soil properties are often not well defined near survey boundaries. According to DuPont Pioneer – a more accurate and cost-effective method of delineation is soil electrical conductivity. This uses on-the-go soil sensors configured with GPS. DuPont Pioneer says soil electrical conductivity mapping is a simple, inexpensive toll farmers can use to quickly and accurately characterize soil differences within farm fields. Farmers can get more information on mobile soil sensing devices and management zones online in the DuPont Pioneer Crop Insights.
