Farm Bill Quietly Moving Along

While the farm bill seems to be stalled there is optimism among members of the Conference Committee that a measure will be passed soon. House and Senate Agriculture Committee leaders were unable to reach an agreement before the Thanksgiving recess – but continued to talk last week. This week – discussions will continue – and although the Senate is still on recess – Senate members of the conference committee have been told they could be called back to Washington for an open conference meeting on the bill. The farm bill is only one of the critical items remaining on the Congressional “to-do” list for 2013. The House and Senate Budget Chairs are still working to reach a deal to set a budget framework for federal agency spending for the rest of the fiscal year. They have reportedly narrowed their focus – but some insiders believe even a small bargain is beyond reach.
