Yields Good, Moisture High in SW Indiana Corn

A lot of harvest progress was made this week in SW Indiana. Combines have been rolling in Dubois, Davies, Knox, and Gibson Counties. Tony Wolfe, who farms in Gibson County, says harvest has been underway for more than a week for some growers, but it won’t begin for another week for others, “Some folks got their corn planted in late April before the heavy rains came. The rest of us did not get the corn in until mid to late May. The early planted corn is ready for harvest and looks really good.” He added harvest conditions are excellent with firm ground, but field dry down is going very slowly.
Wolfe told HAT some farmers are harvesting at 28% and 30% moisture, “When you have a lot of acreage to harvest, it is just something you have to do.” He said grain dryers are running day and night and a lot of propane is being used this fall. Wolfe said some of the areas that were hit with heavy rains this spring are showing evidence of significant nitrogen loss, and yields in these spots are reduced. Wolfe anticipates it will be a long harvest season this year, “I think we will see the harvest stretch well into November.” He does not expect to begin his harvest operation for another week.
A surprising development this year is the soybean crop. While bean yields are expected to be about average in many areas, the double crop soybeans in SW Indiana are having an outstanding year. Wolfe said the double crop soybeans look as good and are as far along in development as the regular planted soybeans, “In a word, they are fantastic. You can hardly tell the difference between the soybeans planted in May and those that went in after the wheat in June.” He noted that some shorter season varieties in Vigo County have already been harvested.
