Indiana corn production in 2014 totaled 1.08 billion bushels, a record for the state and 5 percent above last year’s total of 1.03 million bushels. Corn acreage harvested for grain totaled 5.77 million, down 1 percent from 2013. The average yield of 188 bushels per acre, also the highest on record, was 11 bushels above the previous record set in 2013.
Indiana’s soybean production totaled 307 million bushels, up 15 percent from last year’s 267 million bushels. Harvested acreage was estimated at 5.49 million, up 6 percent from last year’s 5.19 million acres. The average yield of 56.0 bushels per acre was 4.5 bushels above the previous year’s record-tying average yield of 51.5.
Hay production (all types), at 1.95 million tons in 2014, was up 8 percent from the previous year.
Spearmint production in Indiana was 226,000 pounds, with average yields of 61 pounds per acre. Peppermint production was 510,000 pounds, yields averaged 60 pounds per acre
Nationally, corn for grain production is estimated at a record 14.2 billion bushels, down 1 percent from the November forecast but 3 percent above the revised 2013 estimate. The average yield in the United States is estimated at a record high of 171.0 bushels per acre. This is down 2.4 bushels from the November forecast but 12.9 bushels above the revised 2013 average yield of 158.1 bushels per acre. Area harvested for grain is estimated at 83.1 million acres, up slightly from the November forecast but down 5 percent from the revised 2013 acreage.
Soybean production in 2014 totaled a record 3.97 billion bushels, up slightly from the November forecast and up 18 percent from 2013. The average yield per acre is estimated at a record high 47.8 bushels, 0.3 bushel above the November forecast and 3.8 bushels above the 2013 yield. Harvested area is up 9 percent from 2013 to 83.1 million acres and is the highest on record.
