New Name and Approach to Weed Control by Monsanto

Monsanto has powerful technology for the control of weeds and insects, and now it is putting them together under a new name.  Austin Horn with Monsanto says combining their insect and weed control traits under one name help growers view crop protection in a more comprehensive way, “The new name is Roundup Ready Plus Crop Management Solutions. You formerly have known it as Roundup Ready Plus Weed Management Solutions.” He added both their weed control and insect control traits are being combined into one program.

In addition, Monsanto has made a change in its weed control philosophy, from the days of the no residual Roundup system, “Start out with a weed management system that starts out up front to never let the weeds emerge vs. having to go back and combat then later in the season.” Horn advised growers to start with residual control and then use Roundup in combination with other  modes of action after the crop has emerged.

Monsanto is also leading the way in new systems and technology that deal with the growing problem of weed resistance, “What this will allow growers to do is use Dicamba and glyphosate over the top to control weeds.” This system will be available for cotton growers in 2015 and for Indiana and other soybean growers in 2016.  

Monsanto and FMC Agricultural Solutions have agreed to extend an agreement which will benefit corn, cotton, and soybean growers through Roundup Ready PLUS® Crop Management Solutions by including Hero® insecticide. Hero®  insecticide is a combination of two pyrethroid-based insecticides with activity against 45 labeled insects and is an effective tank-mix partner with fungicides, post-herbicides, and foliar fertilizers on multi-pest complexes common in more than 80 crops including corn, soybeans, and cotton. Monsanto’s relationship with FMC began in the fall of 2010 with the inception of Roundup Ready PLUS Weed Management Solutions.
