Winter wheat yield expectations remained the same for Indiana wheat growers, according to the USDA, NASS, Great Lakes Regional Office. Wheat production in the State is expected to be 18.7 million bushels. The yield forecast of 78 bushels would be 3 bushels below the previous year’s record high. Wheat condition declined slightly from last month, but is still in great condition, and is comparable to the condition at same time last year. Wheat continues to progress ahead of the five year average as growers expect a good crop near that of last year’s record. As of June 4, winter wheat condition was rated at 1% very poor, 4% poor, 28% fair, 52% good, and 15% excellent.
U.S. winter wheat production is forecast at 1.25 billion bushels, up less than 1 percent from the May 1 forecast but down 25 percent from 2016. Based on June 1 conditions, the United States yield is forecast at 48.9 bushels per acre, up 0.1 bushel from last month, but down 6.4 bushels from last year. If realized, this will be the second highest yield on record for the United States, behind only 2016.
