The Stars over Indiana award program recognizes FFA members that have excelled in the Supervised Agricultural Experience Programs. Members compete in 1 of 4 different Star Award Areas: Agribusiness, Agriscience, Farmer, and Placement. Winners were announced during the state convention this past week.

Indiana FFA Program Specialist Joe Martin told Hoosier Ag Today that these students have exceptional projects.

“I think it’s really cool to see that growth from their freshman year, when they’re kind of deciding what is it they want to do, all the way through until their junior and senior years when they are awarded for those, and then where they go from there. I’ve seen a lot of successful people that talk about the fact that back in the day they were the State Star farmer or the State Star in agribusiness and that was what really motivated them to continue their career.”

Ally Laker from the Dekalb FFA Chapter was the State Star in Agriscience this year. Click the play button above to hear Laker detail her project from freshman year to now.

Laker plans to attend The University of Findlay this fall to double major in animal science and biology with a minor in chemistry. She hopes to become a veterinarian.

Martin says the winners can also compete nationally with their projects if they choose.

“After a year out of high school, they can apply to get their American degree. As part of that, there is a star program as well.”

Other State Star winners this year include:

State Star in Agribusiness: Noah Poynter-North Putnam FFA

State Star in Agricultural Placement: Drake Davis- Southmont FFA

State Star Farmer: Tyler Jester- Monroe Central FFA
