Winter wheat jointing is underway in Indiana, and USDA reports that 68% of the crop is rated in good to excellent condition. According to USDA NASS State Statistician Nathanial Warenski, only 6% of the crop is rated in poor to very poor condition with 26% in fair condition.
Warenski’s report also shows that 94% of Indiana topsoil moisture is reported as adequate or surplus after rainfall varied around the state from nothing to over 2 inches in some areas last week. The statewide average precipitation for last week was .81 inches, .12 inches below normal.
Warenski states that livestock were reportedly doing well despite muddy field conditions. In addition to preparation for planting, activity throughout the week for farmers consisted of some lawn mowing, tillage where possible, and repairing storm damage.
