Moisture and cold air dominate the first part of Hoosier Ag Today Chief Meteorologist Ryan Martin’s Seed Genetics Direct Harvest Weather Forecast. Scattered showers and cold temperatures close out this week.

“We have a clipper system, well that’s what I would call it if it was the dead of winter, coming out of Wisconsin into the Great Lakes as we move through the overnight Friday night into Saturday. That means that we don’t dry much on Saturday. We pick up a few hundredths to a few tenths there and behind that clipper, clouds hold through Sunday. Temperatures are going to be a bit below normal. So, evaporation slows dramatically there as well.”

The only time Martin opens the harvest window over the next 10 days or so will be Monday through Thursday of this upcoming week.

“Our temperatures moderate on Monday. We’re downright warm on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday with highs in the 60s, flirting with 70 degrees across parts of the state. Great evaporation! So, depending on how much moisture that you picked up over this past week into the weekend, you should be able to get back at it pretty quickly there Tuesday, and it is a good solid window there for several days. It comes to an end with another round of moisture late in the week.”

Martin’s forecast shows a frontal boundary sweeping through next Friday and Friday night, bringing the potential for a tenth to .75 inches of moisture.

“I think we start to clear out a little bit behind it on Saturday, the 28th, but it’s a dirty clear out, if you will. We’re seeing colder air coming in. I think that means there are a lot of clouds that linger, and I won’t rule out an additional round of moisture, particularly as we go on later into the weekend. Maybe on the afternoon of the 29th and into early Monday the 30th, we could see a secondary batch of moisture come in. We also have the potential for some strong frost activity in here. I think hard freezes are in store for our neighbors up north in Michigan.”
