42 Percent of Corn, 65 Percent of Soybeans Harvested in Indiana

Damp conditions throughout much of Indiana slowed harvest progress for corn and soybeans as both crops remain behind their respective five-year averages.

According to the latest USDA Crop Progress Report, 42 percent of Indiana’s corn for grain and 65 percent of the state’s soybeans have been harvested.

This week’s harvest percentages represent an increase last week from 30 percent for Indiana’s corn and 52 percent for soybeans.

Indiana’s five-year average for corn harvest is 54 percent, while the five-year average for soybeans is 67 percent.

In addition, 96 percent of the state’s corn is mature.

57 percent of the state’s winter wheat crop has been planted with 23 percent of that crop already emerging.

“Soil moisture levels increased from the previous week, with 61 percent of topsoil moisture reported as adequate or surplus,” according to Nathanial Warenski, State Statistician with the USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service Indiana Field Office.

“The average temperature for the week was 52.9 degrees Fahrenheit, 0.9 degrees above normal for the State. The amount of rainfall varied from 0.03 to 1.09 inches over the week. The statewide average precipitation was 0.57 inches, 0.20 inches below normal. There were 4.3 days suitable for fieldwork for the week ending October 22,” says Warenski.

Indiana’s pastures are rated at 30 percent good-to-excellent.
