Martin: ‘A Wide-Open Harvest Window Trying to Develop’ Across Indiana

“I think we’ve got a wide-open harvest window trying to develop here over a large part of Indiana.”

That good news comes from Hoosier Ag Today Chief Meteorologist Ryan Martin in our first Seed Genetics Direct Harvest Weather Forecast update of the season.

Martin has been watching a very significant weather system trying to come together to our west.

“We’re seeing showers and thunderstorms trying to come together across parts of the Northern Plains here. Strong thunderstorms so far, ripping through eastern and central parts of Kansas and Oklahoma. This strong low kind of meanders through the upper Midwest through Saturday and Sunday, and then kind of stalls, falling apart on the bottom edge with showers and storms down through Missouri. And there’s almost like a wall near the Mississippi River that this front just can’t come past.”

Martin says we may dodge most of those showers going into Monday, but we’ll have plenty of cloud cover.

“That wall that we referenced back near the Mississippi River, it’s definitely in full force along the Illinois/Indiana line. So, plenty of clouds around at times on Monday into Tuesday, but at this point, I’m dialing back on moisture, only a few hit and miss showers here and there.”

Martin’s forecast calls for a dry Wednesday and Thursday next week, but come Friday there is a disturbance trying to come together in the Ohio Valley.

“Now this is going to focus more on Tennessee, Kentucky, the bootheel of Missouri, but I would be remiss if I didn’t mention maybe a few showers trying to sneak into southern tier counties of Indiana. We’ll have to watch the track of this. I also think with the dry change in our nearby forecast for early next week, we could be setting up the atmosphere to have that system late next week change, too. So, right now, chances of moisture for Friday into early Saturday down south, nothing up north, but those chances could go away relatively quickly.”
