Corn dry down progress was slow with the cool, damp weather.
According to the latest USDA Crop Progress Report, 68 percent of Indiana’s corn for grain and 87 percent of the state’s soybeans have been harvested.
This week’s harvest percentages represent an increase from last week’s 56 percent for corn and 79 percent for soybeans.
Indiana’s five-year average for corn harvest is 76 percent, while the five-year average for soybeans is 85 percent.
Also, 84 percent of winter wheat has been planted, and 61 percent has emerged. Winter wheat is rated at 73 percent good-to-excellent.
“Soil moisture levels increased slightly from the previous week, with 71 percent of topsoil moisture reported as adequate or surplus,” reports Nathanial Warenski, State Statistician, USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service, Indiana Field Office.
“The average temperature for the week was 42.6 degrees Fahrenheit, 6.9 degrees below normal for the State. The amount of rainfall varied from none to 1.16 inches over the week. The statewide average precipitation was 0.38 inches, 0.37 inches below normal. There were 5.4 days suitable for fieldwork for the week ending November 5.”
