Author and Professional Speaker Comes Home to Indiana FFA Convention

The opening session keynote speaker at the 83rd Indiana State FFA Convention Monday night was back home again. Scott McKain, well known author and business speaker, was an Indiana FFA state president and then a national officer. In a visit with HAT just before he went on stage, McKain recalled how his life changed as a result of state convention on that very same Purdue campus.

“When I was in FFA and when I was here at Purdue, and not just getting elected to state officer later on, but literally hearing the speakers and competing in the contests, and doing all the things that these students are doing this week, for a lot of us all throughout Indiana and good grief it’s transmitted all throughout the country obviously, these are moments that shape and changes lives. So just to be here and watch, much less to have the opportunity to speak is just an incredible experience I’m grateful for.”

The author of three #1 Amazon.com books also received a top ten business book of the year honor recently for Collapse of Distinction. And last week and this week speaking engagements are taking him to Stockholm, Oslo, Los Angeles twice, New York, Pepperdine University, and Las Vegas.

But home for McKain is still Indiana where he grew up in Crothersville FFA and became a high school and college farm broadcaster. The career path keeps him close to agriculture.

“I’ve been very fortunate that a lot of ag groups are bringing me in to speak. We had a chance to cross paths of course at the National Association of Farm Broadcasting, where I spoke. I’m getting ready to speak to a series of meetings for every John Deere dealer in the United States, so I’m really looking forward to that. So it’s really been rewarding to be able to continue to work in the field of agriculture, and obviously hope to do more of that as the years go by.”

McKain capitalized on the FFA convention theme, I Believe, by encouraging students to question what they believe in, and then to believe in themselves as they set their own goals for life. And he said there is no better time to set those realistic goals than now, during high school.[audio:https://www.hoosieragtoday.com//wp-content/uploads//2012/06/Scott-McKain-home-at-FFA-state-convention.mp3|titles=Scott McKain home at FFA state convention]Hear the full HAT interview:[audio:https://www.hoosieragtoday.com//wp-content/uploads//2012/06/Scott-McKain-talks-with-HAT.mp3|titles=Scott McKain talks with HAT]
