Dry, favorable conditions allowed farmers to push harvest closer to completion, according to Greg Matli, Indiana State Statistician for the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service. Much of the state saw cool, sunny, and dry weather for the Thanksgiving week. The statewide average temperature was 38.8 degrees, 0.9 degrees below normal. Statewide precipitation was 0.06 inches, below average by 0.80 inches. There were 4.8 days available for fieldwork for the week ending November 26, up 1.6 days from the previous week.
Regionally, corn was 93% harvested for grain in the North, 93% in Central, and 94% in the South. Soybeans were 98% harvested in the North, 96% in Central, and 92% in the South. Winter wheat was 93% emerged in the North, 90% in Central, and 89% in the South. Winter wheat rated in good to excellent condition were 79% in the North, 77% in Central, and 70% in the South.
Wet soil conditions carried over from the previous week impeded progress early on; but, as fields dried, farmers were able to make significant progress on corn and soybean harvest. Winter wheat planting has wrapped up with most of the crop emerged at this point. Livestock were reported in good condition. Other activities for the week included drying and hauling grain to elevators, spreading lime, cleaning equipment for winter storage, and enjoying the Thanksgiving holiday.
