Give Thanks and Support Farmland Protection

During this time of giving thanks – American Farmland Trust President and CEO Andrew McElwaine urges citizens to tell Congress it’s time to finish the 2013 Farm Bill. McElwaine says AFT delivered more than 25-thousand messages to Congress earlier this year demanding they get to work on a final farm bill – and within weeks the farm bill conference committee was named. Now – he says more help is needed to produce final results for farmland protection as farm bill negotiators return to Washinton D.C. this month (December) to try to finish this important legislation. McElwaine urges citizens to send a message to their lawmakers telling them that funding is important for farmland production.

Nearly 1.1-million acres of farmland have been permanently protected to ensure farmland remains in agriculture for generations to come – and AFT says the Agricultural Conservation Easement Program could build on this effort to protect farmland – but it needs the highest possible funding. McElwaine asks everyone to take a few minutes during this busy holiday season to lend a voice to protect America’s farmland.
