Ryan Martin’s Indiana Ag Forecast for February 1, 2018

A front moving across the state today has very little moisture with it. We have to keep an eye out for scattered light rains in east-central and southeastern parts of the state this morning into midday, but nothing after that. Cold air is diving in and we will see February start much colder over the state.

High pressure sets up over NW Ohio tomorrow morning. Strong north winds will keep the cold top of mind and trigger some wind chills. We still look for single digit temps overnight tomorrow night into Saturday morning in the north, and chilly temps statewide.

Saturday will bring some sun early, but clouds come in relatively quick. By evening, our next clipper like wave will be starting to trigger snows over the northern half of the state That action moves south through the overnight, and will be in over central and southern Indiana Sunday morning and midday. We can see a coating to 2 inches up north, a coating to an inch central and south.

This will kick off a very active pattern for the rest of the week. After a dry Monday with high pressure dominating again, a clipper Tuesday brings snows in with a coating to an inch possible. The action really ramps up in KY and perhaps up across into southern Indiana with slightly warmer temps. We could see some rains south of the OH River up to half an inch or more. We mention this because that moisture lingers through Wednesday and may fuel clouds and some additional light snows up in central and northern Indiana if conditions come together just right. The cold air holds over the state north of US 50

Another clipper comes for Thursday and it could have 2-4 inches of snow, followed by another coating to an inch for Friday night into Saturday. Then we have to watch for a system to start the extended period around the 13th. You get the idea. Many little waves possible for next week, none having the exciting wallop of snow, but combined, they could put a nice little blanket on the ground by the time the week is through.

The extended period shows that we have additional snows likely, a stronger system around the 15th, and cold air completely dominating the region. Temps will be below normal of the entire first half of February.
