US Ethanol Exports Up Slightly in June

U.S. exports of denatured and undenatured ethanol totaled 59.9 million gallons (mg) in June, up 13% from the seven-month low in May, according to RFA analysis of government data released today. Year-to-date exports through the first half of 2014 stood at 416.5 mg, indicating an annualized total of 833 mg for the calendar year. Canada received 56% of total exports in June, followed by Mexico (9%) and the United Arab Emirates (8.5%). Notably, Spain was a new destination for U.S. ethanol in June and the United States was a net exporter for the tenth straight month.

June exports of denatured fuel ethanol totaled 40 mg, nearly identical to the May total. Canada was again the leading destination for denatured product, taking in 33.1 mg. The United Arab Emirates imported 5 mg of denatured fuel ethanol, while Jamaica brought in 1.5 mg. As for undenatured fuel ethanol, exports tallied a three-month high of 18.8 mg in June. Mexico (5.1 mg) was the top customer for undenatured product, followed by Spain (4.3 mg), South Korea (2.8 mg), and the Philippines (2.6 mg). Exports of denatured and undenatured ethanol for non-fuel, non-beverage use totaled 1.16 mg.

Meanwhile, U.S. fuel ethanol imports fell to 7.3 mg in June, down 75% from the eight-month high of 28.7 mg in May. Brazil was the leading exporter to the United States, accounting for 6.0 mg. Paraguay followed with 1.3 mg of exports to the U.S. Halfway through 2014, the U.S. had imported just 61.8 mg of fuel ethanol.

Exports of distillers dried grains (DDG)—the animal feed coproduct manufactured by dry mill ethanol plants—continued to soar in June. DDG exports totaled 1.01 million metric tons (mt) in June, down 6% from May but still one of the highest monthly totals on record. Year-to-date exports stood at 6.01 million mt at the 2014 halfway point. China again was the top destination for U.S. DDG, receiving 580,907 mt, or 57% of the total. Mexico ranked second (95,616 mt), followed by Japan (61,240 mt) , Israel (36,445 mt) and Vietnam (32,363 mt).
