Secretaries of Education and Agriculture Anne Duncan and Tom Vilsack have announced their departments are teaming up to enhance ag education and related programs. The announcement came Wednesday during a White House Rural Council meeting. Duncan called agricultural education central to the future of American prosperity – noting that agriculture supports one in 12 jobs across the nation. She said agriculture has to help lead the way in order for the U.S. economy to continue to rebound and grow. Given the incredible contributions of agriculture to the health of the economy and strength of the nation – Vilsack says it’s important to recruit the best and brightest of the next generation to pursue ag careers. He said the partnership with the Department of Education will lead to greater opportunities for young people who want to dedicate their lives to agriculture, food and natural resources.
